Many different Native American cultures have...
Many different Native American cultures have dwelt in the Grand Canyon area. Among the first
of these were the Anasazi, also known as the Basketmakers because of their skill in this craft.
The Anasazi were very similar to their Pueblo descendants in that they lived in large communal houses which they carved into the cliffsides of the canyon. However, around the year 1200 or so, the Anasazi were forced to abandon their land owing to a shortage of food caused by years of severe drought.
